P: Unable to relaunch after File>New Catalog/Switching catalogs, or relaunching with certain plugins

Community Beginner ,
Aug 13, 2025 Aug 13, 2025

Hello, I just updated LR Classic from v14.4 to v14.5 on Windows 10.
I’d like to report a major bug:

  • It is impossible to create a new catalog from within the application (Menu > File > New Catalog).
  • It is impossible to switch catalogs (except by clicking directly on the catalog file to open the application).

The window App closes, then nothing happens for several minutes (Task Manager shows a "zombie" Adobe process still running) → I have to kill It to reOpen the app.

I had to reinstall version 14.4 and everything is now working normally again.

I am able to reproduce this on Win 10 and have logged a ticket with the team. Thank you for your report!
The workaround until a fix is implemented is to:

1. Kill the 'zombie' Lightroom instance in Task Manager.

2. Use the [Alt]+[LrC Icon Click] to gain access to the Create New Catalog/Switch Catalog dialogue.

For those Windows users on the thread, try going to File>Plugin Manager and disabling the LogiOptions Plugin. On my system, that cured the issue.  Other posters in the thread have identif

Since updating I can no longer re-launch Lightroom Classic after it is closed.

To get to relaunch I have to end task in task manager.

Also when creating new catalogue it just closes Lightroom Classic and doesnt reopen?

Should i go back to previous version  I have uninstalled reinstalled and also made sure non of my folders are being synced to Onedrive.

Thanks

The team continues to investigate the issue.

It was deleted as a duplicate @elianoimperato - you've already posted it.
It was also a different issue from this thread.

@elianoimperato

You posted here:  https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/lightroom-classic-14-5-release-is-now-a...

This is an announcement thread. You should post in Lightroom Classic - Discussions instead.

I'm a bit confused. I saw other users posting and I wrote. If for announcement threads are not allowed discussion they can be locked, no?

Thank you,

eliano

I think that the announcement posts should be locked by default if you don't accept the users messages.

So, now I've to write again my problem to see if someone will answer. Or, at least, I hope Adobe will read it and will fix the issue.

Just to add this isn't new to 14.5 and I've found that the "zombie" process does eventually close and LRc re-opens with the new/switched catalog.

I have trouble quitting 14.5 but on a Mac. Normal quit, not changing cataloges. I have to Force Quit.

My LrC is misbehaving after yesterday's update to 14.5; sometimes the app will not fire up when I click the icon on my taskbar or the "open" button in the CC desktop app.

It always runs ok straight after booting the PC, but if I've run the app then closed, then try to open again I get no response.

Looking at the running tasks (Background Processes) using Task Manager I can see several instances of the exe running (1+however many times I've tried to start) but no user interface windows show up. If I kill all running instances using Task Manager then LrC will happily start properly.

After a couple of tests I'm finding that CTRL-Q (or the "X" button) do not actually kill the process, it remains in memory - this is confusing Windows when I request the program again.

Current version LrC 14.5, Lr 8.5
Windows 11 Home 24H2

@Rikk Flohr: Photography I'm not using the LogiOptions (or any other) plugin but have been experiencing very slow app closure/catalog switching for several versions and seems more likely to happen if I've been working in the app for a while.

  • Description of Issue

After shutting Lightroom Classic down it consistently fails to re-start without turning the computer off.

  • Lightroom Classic Version Number (Help>System Info…)

14.5 Build 2025 08061311-4cf2162

  • OS Version Number

11.0.26100

  • Camera Model (sometimes necessary)

Not directly working with any camera, only with imported raw NEF files via directory.

  • Step-by-step Reproduction Instructions (in precise terms, please)

I close Lighroom Classic using the X icon in the top right hand of screen, .

  • The Expected Result

I can re-start Lightoom Classic when needed again.

  • The Actual Result

It fails to restart, always.

Have discovered if I open task manager I can see one of several Lightroom Classic tasks active (with memory utilisation). After closing this task all Lightroom tasks cease (via Task Manager). Lightroom Classic can then be successfully restarted. Appears to be issue with this latest version. No issue before. I'd prefer not to have to do this...

Lightroom Classic 14.5 doesn´t shut down when Midi2LR 6.2.0.1 is running.
I deleted all other 3rd party plugins and the bug still exists.
I can solve the problem by closing the Midi2LR.app before closing LrC!
If I deactivate the plugin completely, the problem no longer occurs.

LrC14.5, Midi2LR 6.2.0.1 , macOS 15 Sequoia, MacStudio M4Max, 64GB RAM 16 C CPU, 40 C GPU
==>> LrC doesn´t close the main window, Midi2LR App stays open.
and
LrC 14.5., Midi2LR 6.2.0.1 , Windows 11 newest update, Nvidia GTX 5070 with newest Studio drivers, I9-9900k, 64GB RAM
==>> LrC does close the main window, but leaves a "ghost process", visible at the task manager, preventing a new start of LrC. Midi2LR App stays open.

For debugging reasons I installed an older Version of LrC on my Windows 11 PC:
LrC 14.0.1 works fine without errors and closes as it should
LrC 14.1 works fine without errors and closes as it should
LrC 14.2 works fine without errors and closes as it should
LrC 14.3 works fine without errors and closes as it should
LrC 14.3.1 works fine without errors and closes as it should
LrC 14.4 works fine without errors and closes as it should

(Since my Mac Studio is brand new and I'm not yet very familiar with MacOS, I'd rather not install an older version of LrC here. However, I assume that the error also occurs in the same LrC version for Mac.)

Regarding to the Lightroom Queen Forum a similar error occurred with the Tourbox plugin, which is now fixed by an recently published plugin update.

Best reghards,

Ulrich

I have the same problems after installing the update Lightroom version 14.5.

Since updating I can no longer re-launch Lightroom Classic after it is closed.

To get to relaunch I have to end task (2) in the task manager.

Yeh. I thought the Toolbox update had fixed it, but I didn't get the usual "update required" after installing it. After noticing a few other problems, I rebooted and found that probably was still there. Killing the zombi LR process using taskmanager or a process manager seems to be the best solution for now.

After the latest update, Lightroom Classic 14.5 - whenever I go to close the app, it just hangs there and is showing as "not responding".  Have to use Force Quit to get it to shutdown.

1.  Version of app - Lightroom Classic 14.5

2.  Platform and OS Version - Apple Mac Mini M4 Pro - 48G/1TB 820GB free SSD space, Sequoia 15.5

3.  Repro Steps - Command + Q or selecting to quit the app from menu

4.  Expect Lightroom to shutdown, instead it stays active, shows the pinwheel icon like it is working on something, but never end.  Must go in and force quit the app to get it to shut down.
